Can brushing your teeth with toothpaste containing baking soda make a cavity hurt if you have one?

I brush with different toothpastes sometimes. But when I used Crest with baking soda, a tooth in the back of my mouth begins to ache. Does that mean that baking soda can make a cavity hurt?

you probably have an exposed nerve.
