I never had hard bread with olive oil and
boiling water. What brings back old memories
is cornbread and milk or buttermilk. I wished
    I could have some now.

    I agree! I was very …
I agree! I was very close to my Grandma and loved talking to her and cooking with her but never recorded anything. Video taping our elders’ stories is an awesome idea in general and for cooking in particular because like others have said they didn’t go by the recipe, used what they had so it’s kind of hard to write it in a recipe form. Clara is amazing and I bet if more people talked to thier grandparents about thier youth they’d see they are too!

    Also, it may seem …
Also, it may seem like packaged stuff is cheap at maybe $1 a pop, but when you add up enough for a family, and consider that when you buy staple items in bulk and cook from scratch it is way less expensive. Also you would have more than one meal because you would have leftover flour, oil, beans, sugar, etc. Another thing, hamburger helper might be cheap, but what about the hamburger meat?

It brings me to tears to know that people were so poor as to make this “dish”. I hope we can all realize how wasteful we are today and really appreciate all that we have. Thanks to Clara, and to her (I am uming) great grandson for bringing her to us via the ‘net.

  24. Michaely63 says:

    lisalizapop, you …
lisalizapop, you are bourgeois, with your olive oil and herb bread dip. You have missed the whole idea and spirit of this series of vids. When our generation feels the real depth of the oncoming depression, having a little will be just enough, but our microwave/Mtv lifestyles may be the downfall of us all, and The Wisdom of those like Clara may help us pull through it all.

  25. clancypants77 says:

    our generation …
our generation should start listening to yours a lot more and appreciate what we have now as soon we will have less, but i´m sure my generation, im 31, will make sure we know that together we will survive this and expose the international criminal gang known as the new world order, look it up intelligent people, this is not some silly theory, look at 9-11 closely,
