Okay, so from my earlier question it seems that they are not owned by the same company. So to those of you that have been to both, which do you prefer and why? Or why do you not like one?
Overall, my vote would be for Panera Bread. The menu selection is comparable at both places, and the prices are pretty much the same. However, locally, the Panera is a much better atmosphere. Their booths are more comfy, it is less crowded with tables and doesn’t quite have the restaurant feel to it that ABC does.
Foodwise, I think Panera has a better selection of soups. ABC only has one or two soups I really like (Wisconsin Cheese and the Chicken Noodle), but Panera has about five. Their breads are both equally good, but I think Panera may have ABC beat on the cinnamon crunch bagels. When it comes to the sandwiches, I think Panera has a better selection of variety, although ABC does have the grilled panninis. For salads, Panera wins outright, the caesar salad at Panera is way better. ABC does have a bit more selection of sweets, but Panera has a better selection of different baked goodies like souffles and scones than ABC.
I can’t comment on the coffees and all since I don’t drink coffee. I do like the hot chocolate at Panera, but I don’t think I have ever had the hot chocolate at ABC.
So it comes down to Panera having slightly better food, but a much better atmosphere and ambiance. It just feels like the ABC here is more like a restaurant than a cozy and comfy cafe.

Panera is only half as far from my house as Atlanta Bread, so that makes a big difference (I live out in the boonies, too, so it really matters).
That aside, I like Panera’s salads…the Asian chicken salad with mandarin oranges is fantastic. Combining it with a whole wheat baguette, and apple and glass of sweet tea makes a great lunch. Their kids menu is also great. My daughter cleans her plate every time we go.
Their actual bakery products are also quite good. I usually pick up a loaf of bread when we visit, and their bagels and breakfast pastries are very passable. The coffee is only okay, but taken as a whole, their breakfast offerings are quite satisfactory.
Physically, I like the Panera store better, too. There are a couple of snug little nooks perfect for a family of three, as well as a more open area where you can sit up next to the fireplace. On a cold winter day, nothing beats a cup of coffee and a bagel by the fire.

Panera’s food tend sto be lower on the caloric intake than comparable Atlanta Bread Company food. Also, the side item options are helathier with apple and whole wheat baguette being added to the usual whote baguette or chips that Atlanta Bread Company has. Also, Panera’s bread bowld are smaller when you get a soup in a bread bowl. Lastly, Panera uses many fresh and organic ingredients that Atlanta Bread Company does not.

I don’t think their bagels are as good tasting, their muffins aren’t in Panera’s league and , in general, they aren’t as friendly. I also like that all Panera’s have wifi and a sit down area – not all ABC’s have those. Panera also has Asiago cheese bagels, which I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE.
