Research Before You Do: Short Talk about Baking Soda, Your Hair’s Condition and Products
Very Informative Comment Response by umkish: The hair is acidic. For every BS wash, you will need to normalize the ph with an acid rinse.
Great Response by Aven from www.mothering.com thread Does washing hair with baking soda damage it?
The vinegar is an important part of the mix. It balances the pH of the baking soda. I imagine that if you only used BS and no vinegar that it would break your hair after a while. It could break it down chemically.
The intention of the BS/V cleaning is that if your scalp is clean, your hair will be clean too. The oils come from your scalp, and not from your hair, afterall.
I found it a bit drying, and I’ve recently added aloe to my vinegar rinse. Love it!
My regimen: 1 Tbs baking soda dissolved into 8 oz warm water (I use a peri bottle) and pour it over my head, focusing on the roots. Scrub with finger tips, rinse. Then I use 1 ounce of a 1:8 dilution of vinegar. Pour it on, let it sit a minute, rinse (no more scrubbing).

By all means do your research before trying any method.
The best alternative, find a gentle cleanser or soap bar.

I posted my …
I posted my experience with the baking soda conditioner DC on Nappturality. One week later, my hair is starting to feel a LITTLE better but it’s still really dry. Last night I used a commercial DC that said it was for “very dry chemically processed hair” and I feel like that’s exactly what my hair is even though the chemical consisted of baking soda and conditioner. You brought up a good point about shea butter though: Now that my hair is fried, maybe I can use it straight now, lol.

So true…you never …
So true…you never know about the long worded ingredients in (yes even natural)shampoos and conditioners if they coexist well with a substance like baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, etc…

Exactly. I stick to …
Exactly. I stick to mixing my butters. The rest of my products are still “natural”, but I leave the chemistry to the experts. I can read as much as I want about properties of ingredients but who knows the long term effects. My hair’s reaction is usually an indicator of something working for me, but long term damage is subtle. Plus, it just complicates the routine. The hair is acidic. For every BS wash, you will need to normalize the ph with an acid rinse. Just find a gentle cleanser or soap bar.
